The Online Hunt For A Man Who Ghosted His Family, And More Of This Week's 'One Main Character'
You can run, but you can't hide from internet super sleuths.

Every day, somebody says or does something that earns them the scorn of the internet. Here at Digg, as part of our mission to curate what the internet is talking about right now, we rounded up the main characters on X from this past week and held them accountable for their actions.

This week, we've got Clint Eastwood's unhinged selfie, Kelsey Plum's popcorn eating, an ex-soccer player questioning the weather, a couple's Notion-managed marriage and a man being tracked down after allegedly ghosting his pregnant wife.

Saturday

Matt Le Tissier

The character: Matt Le Tissier, ex-footballer, amateur weatherman and goverment hoax sleuth

The plot: Matt Le Tissier is an English former soccer player who enjoyed success in the '90s as a rather flamboyant chap. Since his retirement and post-playing career as a broadcaster, Le Tissier has not shied away from speaking his mind — and he most recently chimed in on the weather.

After realizing how bad the weather has been this year, compared to the "wall to wall sunshine" during the pandemic, Le Tissier posted: "It's almost like they planned it that way."

It's not the first time Le Tissier has said something incredibly stupid, so people weren't shocked; it was very much in character for him. Unfortunately, he's also a reply guy, which makes him slightly harder to dunk on.

The repercussion: While the post did make its way outside of soccer and UK circles, it was mostly Le Tissier's compatriots, and others familiar with his playing career, that took the lead on dunking on him.

Saturday

Clint Eastwood

The character: Clint Eastwood, actor, unhinged mountain man

The plot: It's normal for people to share photos of themselves on social media, but Clint Eastwood needs some real practice. Not only is the 93-year-old's expression and hairdo on the intense side in this photo, but the glowing red lighting and hilarious number of watermarks applied to a single image make it clear that he doesn't fully understand how selfies are supposed to work.

The repercussion: A lot of people stopped taking Clint seriously when he berated a chair that represented Barack Obama over a decade ago. The fact that he's sharing deranged photos online only confirms everyone's existing beliefs about him, honestly.

Grant Brunner

Sunday

Ben Lang

The character: Ben Lang, investor, one half of a Notion couple, optimizer

The plot: On Sunday, Ben Lang shared an X post about how "religiously" he and his wife use the organizational app Notion to manage their days. He also provided a screenshot of their shared projects and tasks — which included an "our principles" section, where the couple can remind each other of "what's important to them," and a section for logging their "plans and goals for the long run."

The repercussion: It's nice that this couple's lives are so intertwined, and they seem genuinely committed to making their relationship as fair and meaningful as possible — but people still found it funny that the pair manage (or should I say "optimize"?) their marriage down to the micro level.

Saturday

Kelsey Plum

The character: Kelsey Plum, legendary WNBA player Kelsey Plum, popcorn eater

The plot: Plum, who has every accolade a basketball player could dream of, was at one of the recent NCAA Tournament games eating some popcorn. But the way she was eating it was...

The repercussion: … It was weird. And people were weird about her eating the popcorn weird. Some people accused Plum of putting on the "silly, kooky girl" front, while others defended her right to eat popcorn any way she likes. Anyways, this short clip really blew up.

Monday

Charles Withers

The character: Charles Withers, chef, husband, alleged ghoster

The plot: Okay, buckle up: this might be one of the wildest Main Characters to date. On Monday, an X user shared a screenshot of a Facebook post written by someone called Ashley McGuire.

In the post, McGuire accuses her husband, whom she calls Charles Withers, of abandoning her and her child while she was pregnant with their second baby. "He decided being a husband and a dad wasn't the lifestyle he wanted anymore and he ghosted," she wrote. "Like, gone without a trace."

McGuire appealed to the internet to help her track down her estranged husband — whom she described as British, a chef and "charming AF" — so that she could divorce him.

The repercussion: McGuire's post went viral on X, with thousands of people across the internet flabbergasted that anyone could simply up and abandon their family — and super sleuths immediately got to work on trying to track Withers down.

In less than 24 hours, the story came to a satisfying ending — not for Withers, of course, but for everyone else. According to an update from McGuire, people turned up "more than enough information" for her to finally locate him — so let's hope she gets that divorce finalized ASAP and can move on for good.

Actually, there are three sides to every divorce...his, hers, and the cold hard truth.
